The Best Smoothie Recipe Ever

If you’re like me you might find it challenging to eat a healthy diet when you’re on the go day in and day out. I have a solution for you – drink a smoothie! You can get your daily dose of fruits and vegetables in one convenient glass!

I love my daily smoothie! Over the years I have perfected it to my liking, which includes a variety of healthy ingredients that I know supports my body and contributes to my good health.

What I love about this recipe is it changes from day to day depending what I have on hand so I know I’m getting variety of nutrients throughout the week. My daughter calls me a smoothie alchemist 🙂

Here’s the recipe:

1. Start with the Liquid

I prefer to use 1 cup of water or green tea and 1/4 cup of pineapple/orange juice. Your liquid can be any type of juice or milk. Some options are all-natural, no-sugar-added juices or milk, including raw milk, coconut milk, rice milk, soy milk, almond milk, etc. You can even make smoothies with coffee! It’s ok to pick whatever liquid you like but know any of these variances will change the flavor of the best smoothie ever 🙂

2. Add Greens

Spinach and kale are my favorite smoothie greens, but I will use whatever I have on hand – romaine, collards, swiss chard, or a mix—as long as you remove any thick stems. Note: Kale has a strong flavor so you might want to use it sparingly.

3. Add Fruit

Fruit is the sweetening agent. I use one cup frozen blueberries (I prefer to thaw all frozen fruit before adding it to my smoothie – my body digests it better), half of a banana, a quarter of an apple, and any other fruit I have on hand: berries (strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, cranberries), mangoes, peaches, pineapple, kiwi, grapes, etc.

4. Add Veggies

I add whatever I have on hand: cauliflower, zucchini, cucumber, celery, carrots, beets, and broccoli (broccoli has a strong flavor so use this sparingly).

5. Add a Healthy Fat

Avocado is my favorite and it makes the smoothie more creamy. I also like to use coconut oil (1-2 tablespoons) when I want a more tropical flavor.

The only other ingredient I add to my smoothie is fresh turmeric. I cut off about an inch and slice it before adding it to the smoothie.

One of the reasons this is the best smoothie recipe ever is you can mix it up! Experiment, try different additions to make it more interesting and to add a variety to your daily smoothie routine.

Any of the following can be added to jazz it up:

  • Yogurt
  • Nuts
  • Honey
  • Flaxseeds
  • Coconut
  • Spirulina powder
  • Maca powder
  • Collagen powder
  • Vitamin C
  • Pumpkin puree
  • Nut butter
  • Chia seeds
  • Herbs (like fresh mint)

After you’ve added all your ingredients, puree it in a blender.

The strength of your blender determines how long to let it work its magic, however, it’s really hard to go too long if you’re aiming for a super smooth texture.

I love my Black & Decker Fusion Blade Blender. It does a great job of blending the ingredients with blades that won’t cut your hands up when you wash it.

Ideally, you want to drink your smoothie ASAP. Letting it sit for more than 20 minutes might mean it starts to thicken or separate. You can store it in the fridge for up to a day if you really have to, but the fresh smoothie tastes better.

Having said that, with all these yummy ingredients, this smoothie recipe can be very filling so I usually have to sip it slowly or store some of it in the refrigerator for later.
